The Region of Waterloo embraced speed cameras with plans for an aggressive expansion, now entering budget time, they have to navigate losing a significant revenue source.
On Thursday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government pushed through legislation that would unplug the cameras by Nov. 14.
Regional councillors in Waterloo Region are now wondering what the fallout will be and how it will impact capital projects.
Waterloo mayor Dorothy McCabe said municipalities will have to reprioritize projects.
“The purpose of the speed cameras was with the revenues raised over and above the cost of the cameras was to go to traffic calming measures,” she said. “That’s obviously not going to be possible now.”
