POTSDAM, New York (WWNY) - State police gathered in Potsdam on Friday to say goodbye to one of their own.

A motorcade brought retired Zone Sergeant Steven Greene of Colton to the Stables at Windy Point.

Police said Greene passed away last week in the line of duty.

According to his obituary, the 65-year-old’s death came after a long battle with cancer, an illness stemming from his service in and around the World Trade Center site following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Greene was born in Potsdam and later called Colton his home. He joined the state police in 1981 and retired in 2002 with the rank of zone sergeant.

He leaves behind a wife and 2 sons.

His family says Greene will be remembered for his dedication, courage, and love for his family.
