A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Department of Agriculture to resume providing food benefits to millions of Americans through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) with contingency funds allocated by Congress, according to a news release from Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser.
U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani gave the USDA until Nov. 3 to explain how it will provide either reduced or full benefits during the ongoing government shutdown. The court also found that if the contingency fund cannot fully fund the program in November, the federal government must consider other, additional funding sources.
