LEXINGTON, N.C. — Millions of families across the country will not receive their monthly SNAP benefits on Nov. 1. One soul food restaurant in Lexington is doing its part to feed those depending on government assistance.
Tyleata Jones, head chef and owner of JJ's Mama's Soul Food, said she woke up Thursday morning feeling compelled to act after learning the fate of SNAP benefits.
Prior to the government shutdown, Jones offered free food to hungry people in the community. Now, she's ready to give back on a larger scale.
On the restaurant's first day handing out free meals, staff served about 80 people. Then, donations started pouring in from local businesses in the community.
"I was willing to do it alone, but so many people and businesses stepped up to help me," said Jones.
