ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - As data centers continue to pop up, rural places are forced to adapt and find new ways to monitor natural resources in Michiana, like our local rivers.
That includes a new water gauge in St. Joseph County that’s now operational.
A water gauge installed around a month ago in the Crumstown area is now transferring data directly to the National Weather Service, meaning the public can now see the level of the Kankakee River at any time.
“It is an essential warning system for when we’re going to begin to have flood conditions and for the National Weather Service to predict flooding throughout the region, and mostly for our commission and our local law enforcement and emergency response teams to be able to prepare for bad weather events,” says Scott Pelath, ex
