BUFFALO, N.Y. — Erie County Sheriff John Garcia and Undersheriff William Cooley faced tough questions Thursday from Erie County legislators over their apparent lack of curiosity regarding the circumstances of how their narcotics chief, D.J. Granville, smashed into seven vehicles in April 2024.

Democratic Legislators Taisha St. Jean Tard, John Bargnesi and Jeanne Vinal pressed Garcia, a Republican, about why he did not ask Buffalo Police if he could review the body camera footage from officers who responded to the scene of Granville's hit-and-run crashes. The body camera footage was later deleted by Buffalo Police.
