House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) tried to do damage control after Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the government “failed” Americans relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

On Nov. 1, millions of Americans will lose access to SNAP benefits for the first time in modern history unless Congress or President Donald Trump approve funding for the program during the government shutdown. On Friday, a reporter asked Rollins during a press conference what her message was to those Americans losing their SNAP benefits.

Rollins responded by blaming the government for the crisis, prompting Johnson to “clarify” her words.
