Starting in 2026, Sacramento State University will require first-time freshmen to live on campus for two years, a major shift for the commuter-heavy school. University leaders say the rule supports student success by improving access to housing, meals, tutoring, and counseling. The change follows a state audit calling for expanded student housing. Some students, however, are concerned about rising costs and limited dorm space. To prepare, new residence halls—Mount Whitney Hall and Hornet Place—are set to open before full implementation in 2027.
