CLAYTON, N.M. (KRQE) – There is public outcry over a New Mexico police officer shooting and killing a dog in a truck stop parking lot. That has prompted the police department to release body camera footage of the incident.
Someone who witnessed the shooting in Clayton posted a video on social media, stirring up backlash against the police department. The Clayton police chief said that the video didn't tell the whole story and said their officers didn't have any option but to put the dog down.
"There's dangers involved with dogs, I mean my officers put themselves in harm's way to help retrieve a dog on private property," said Chief of Police for the Clayton Police Department Al Nieves.
