Alabama’s Legislative Black Caucus on Friday asked Gov. Kay Ivey to call the Legislature into special session starting on Monday to find emergency funding for SNAP .

The letter follows up on one released earlier this week by the Alabama Senate minority caucus calling for a special session to allow the governor and lawmakers to find emergency food assistance funds.

The federal government shutdown has caused the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for November.

About 750,000 people in Alabama receive SNAP benefits, an average monthly benefit of about $190.

The situation is uncertain in Alabama and across the nation as the shutdown reaches the one-month mark.
