The Elliot Lake Women’s Group (ELWG) hosted its four-day Homeless Challenge from Oct. 23 to 26 at Grace Christian Centre.

This year’s event started on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. and ended on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m., says Rebecca Kelterborn, of ELWG.

The goal of the Homeless Challenge was twofold: a fundraiser by ELWG, which operates Maplegate Women’s Shelter and Larry’s Place Emergency Shelter for Men. The funds raised will go to Larry’s Place, which is in desperate need of funding. While the Maplegate Women’s Shelter does get funding there is no permanent funding for Larry’s Place. As a result, the men’s shelter will change its hours of operation to nighttime only. As of Dec. 1, Larry Place’s will only be opened from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. daily.
