The newest workers at Cross Orchards Historic Site have an appetite for their job, literally.

Kochia, delicious. Russian knapweed, tasty. Tall grass, please. Animal crackers, oh, yes!

“You take that,” said Robert Andrews, referring to a five-pound container of animal crackers. “Shake it. They will follow you forever.”

The two ewes and three lambs from High Country Environmental Grazing, owned by Andrews and his son, Kyle Andrews, arrived at Cross Orchards a couple of Saturdays ago to take care of a weed issue the Museums of Western Colorado site has tried to address without success for years across its 16 acres.

“Russian knapweed and the kochia are two of the weeds that have been giving us the biggest grief,” said Matt Darling, curator for Cross Orchards. “At times, all we could do was
