Mark Zahra’s wife Elyse had planned to have a quiet Saturday night, but those plans were out the window after her husband’s Derby Day demolition at Flemington.
Zahra banked at least a cool $144,000 – plus bonuses – for just over seven minutes in the saddle during a stunning two hours where he rode four winners in a row. His haul included victories in the feature Victoria Derby and the Coolmore Stud Stakes aboard Godolphin colts Observer and Tentyris respectively.
And it took a brilliant, trademark all-the-way win by the people’s favourite Pride Of Jenni in the Empire Rose Stakes to snap Zahra’s winning streak.
“What a day,” Zahra, the third jockey to ride four winners on Derby Day, said.
