Wilmington is taking several steps to address the rising number of people who face homelessness.

But, Mayor John Carney said recently that the city also gets a constant influx of people from other cities and towns in need of services. He cited recent reports of the City of Philadelphia paying for $270,000 worth of one-way bus tickets.

"People know around the area, around the region that Wilmington is a compassionate and caring place," Carney said. "As a result, our city has somehow become attractive for unhoused populations from other locations nearby."

Carney also said behavioral health specialists in Kent and Sussex Counties often direct their unhoused people to Wilmington. He said he's spoken with mayors in other parts of Delaware, and has sent a letter to Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle
