Jim Greene's 12 years as Jefferson County sheriff from 1981-93 were wrapped in controversy, culminating in Greene serving a six-month prison sentence on tax evasion and mail fraud charges.

Greene pleaded guilty to failing to pay taxes on $135,000 of income and depositing almost $1,700 that was supposed to go toward reimbursing deputies for expenses into a political fund , The Courier Journal reported.

Greene's guilty plea agreement in May 1993 included no prison time, but a federal district judge ordered a stunning reversal in August, handing out the six-month sentence along with a $125,000 fine and three years of supervision. Greene resigned as sheriff and pulled out of his reelection campaign.
