Whoever wins Montreal’s election on Sunday, our new mayor will probably be the most boring we’ve had in decades.
Looking back over 75 years, Montreal has generally had big, exciting politicians:
The Olympian Jean Drapeau, Pierre “Flower Bouquet” Bourque, Denis “Formula One” Coderre and Pink Line Plante, while even Jean Doré was a lively motormouth.
Everyone but Gérald Tremblay had exciting, or at least eccentric, personalities, whether you liked them or not.
But this year, both mayoralty candidates with a real chance to win — Soraya Martinez Ferrada (Ensemble Montréal) and Luc Rabouin (Projet Montréal) — have the charisma of porridge.
Rabouin comes across as a number-loving accountant manqué, perfect to be right-hand policy chief beside the actual mayor, as he was under Valérie Plante
