When I took my oath to support and defend the Constitution, I never imagined the greatest threat would come from inside our own state government. Yet today, Alabama lawmakers want to redefine what it means to be an American.
Last week, Alabama Republicans prefiled a bill ( link ) to amend our state constitution. Their plan? To bar naturalized citizens — people who came here legally, earned citizenship, and swore allegiance to our country — from serving as governor, attorney general, or even as state legislators.
There’s no shortage of misguided ideas in the Legislature’s supermajority, but this proposal stands out. Secretary of State Wes Allen — who is leading this charge ( link ) — should be held accountable for refusing to honor his oath.
