MARQUETTE, MI - It seems fitting that the first measurable snowfall outside the National Weather Service’s only Upper Peninsula office started on Halloween.

It’s a perfect metaphor for how Michiganders view the incoming winter season: Trick or Treat!

Half of us might think snow this early is a nasty trick from Mother Nature. The rest of us are digging out our hats and cozy blankets in a happy show of “bring it on!” togetherness.

Whichever camp you’re in, the first measurable snow has been recorded this morning outside the NWS office near Marquette. Yes, we’ve had some snowflakes spotted already this season in the Keweenaw Peninsula and trace amounts of snow elsewhere that melted pretty quickly.

And as the numbers show, measurable snow is running a little late this year.
