Jacobson Plaza is preparing for winter.

The City of Sioux Falls announced Oct. 31 that the year-round skate ribbon will temporarily close as it converts its concrete surface to unveil an ice-skating rink uptown.

The area will close Nov. 3, and weather-permitting, will open again Nov. 21, on the same day as the holiday lighting ceremony of Winter Wonderland at Falls Park.

“We can’t wait to see families and friends making memories on the ice,” says recreation manager Jackie Nelson. “Our team has been working hard to transform the space into a vibrant winter destination.”

The 14,000-square-foot skate ribbon averaged 3,000 weekly guests this summer and over 5,000 on the weekends. Nelson said the “one-of-a-kind attraction” has seen a steady increase in traffic since opening last June.
