With federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program set to halt Saturday due to the government shutdown, food banks and other organizations statewide are stocking up to help the nearly 1 million Washingtonians who rely on food stamps.
Even though federal judges on Friday ordered the Trump administration to tap into emergency funds to deliver benefits, it’s unclear when or if recipients will actually receive them.
On Friday, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell proclaimed a limited civil emergency starting Saturday that will provide $4 million per month to food banks that contract with the city, lasting through the end of the year or until SNAP benefits are restored.
