Michigan residents should prepare for a return to a genuine winter season this year, according to the latest long-range forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

NOAA’s winter outlook, released a couple weeks ago, predicts an active storm track that will bring traditional winter conditions to the state from December through March.

The western Upper Peninsula will likely experience colder-than-normal temperatures as part of a broader pattern affecting the northern Plains.

Meanwhile, Lower Michigan faces “equal chances” of temperatures deviating from the norm, suggesting the region will see enough cold weather to constitute a real winter season rather than some recent “non-winters” we’ve experienced here in Michigan.
