A stretch of Princes Street has been locked down by officers in an emergency incident.

Concerned locals contacted Edinburgh Live at around 1.20pm on Saturday November 1 to say the area had been cordoned off by Police Scotland .

In an image shared with Live, dozens of officers can be seen standing guard around a taped off area at Waverley Market.

One eyewitness said police had informed them a 'serious incident' was underway.

They added: "A huge amount of police are still there investigating."

Tape is blocking off the pavement from the top of the Waverley steps leading into the capital train station and appears to stretch along the walkway to the adjacent bus stop prior to Waverley Bridge.

Officers could be seen parked on the opposite side of the street in front of Barclays bank.
