SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) - An innovative, first-of-its-kind surgery is being performed at Ochsner LSU Health, enhancing care options for babies by allowing them to live normal, functioning lives as they grow up.
It is a very technically precise surgery that was performed on an infant whose skull had fused too early.
"We evaluated that patient and we decided an endoscopic would be appropriate since they were under four-months-old. When it fuses early that means the brain cannot grow and expand as it needs to," explained Dr. Rachel Bishop, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for Ochsner LSU Health.
The surgery starts by making a small incision, then inserting a camera to locate and cut out the suture for the infant's skull to grow normally.
