ATLANTA — More than 2,000 people showed up at New Birth Baptist Church on Saturday morning for a food giveaway as the SNAP benefit freeze begins.
Pastor Jamal Bryant informed the congregation on Sunday, Oct. 26, that the church was planning to help those who may lose their benefits . Members were encouraged to bring canned goods and other food items to donate.
During the food giveaway, the church had to start turning away people way before the anticipated end time. The church said the line was cut off at about 2,500 people, and there were even more beyond that.
One of those people in line had been waiting for 14 hours in the hopes of being able to receive food. A church volunteer expressed how she was happy to be serving the community and helping those in need.
