HOUSTON — Thousands of families lined up at NRG Stadium on Saturday as the Houston Texans and Houston Food Bank partnered to host a large-scale food distribution for those impacted by the ongoing government shutdown.

The drive-thru event came after SNAP benefits, which roughly 42 million Americans rely on to buy food, did not go out Saturday.

At NRG Stadium's Yellow Lot, lines of cars rolled through as volunteers loaded boxes filled with fresh produce, gallons of milk, and proteins. Organizers said demand for help has surged across the Houston area since federal food assistance was halted.

The Texans donated $100,000 to the Houston Food Bank to support the effort, which helped more than 5,000 families.
