SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- The ballot explanation is ready should sponsors gather enough valid signatures for a proposed constitutional amendment on property taxes.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley released the ballot explanation Friday for an amendment that would repeal state property taxes and replace them with a "retail transaction" tax. If the sponsors get 35,017 valid signatures the proposal would be on the 2026 election ballot.
The sponsor of the proposed initiated Constitutional Amendment is Abolish Property Taxes SD, a Statewide Ballot Question Committee formed by Julie Frye-Mueller, Matt Smith, and Mike Mueller, according to Jackley's news release.
