More than 100 wild donkeys will be shot after a State Administrative Tribunal ruled against the owners of a Kimberley cattle station who fought for them to stay, claiming the animals deliver ecological benefits including bushfire control and increased soil production.

Chris and Jacqueline Henggeler have spent four years fighting to save a herd of feral donkeys that live on their 78,000 hectare property, Kachana, after they were slapped with a pest control notice and an infringement notice in 2021 for not culling them.

Initially, 72 donkeys were required to be culled. Now that figure stands at 117.
