MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced Friday that he is seeking a waiver that would restrict the use of SNAP benefits to purchase sugary food and drinks.
The governor also requested a waiver allowing the purchase of hot prepared chicken with the use of SNAP benefits.
These requests come as SNAP benefits expired for millions of families nationwide due to the ongoing government shutdown.
“Welfare benefits are a hand-up for those in desperate, temporary need,” said Gov. Reeves. “When taxpayers fund these things, they do so strategically. They're trying to help their neighbors into a better life – a more fulfilling one."
