Illinois State Police say a wrong-way driver on an all-terrain vehicle died Saturday morning after crashing into a semi-truck.

According to police, troopers were called to Interstate 55 and Route 30 at approximately 4:46 a.m. Saturday for reports of a person driving an ATV on the highway.

When troopers located the ATV, the operator reversed direction, driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the roadway, authorities said.

Troopers attempted to stop the ATV, but were unsuccessful as the driver collided with a semi-truck near Black Road in Joliet.

The operator of the ATV was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver did not suffer injuries in the collision.

No further information was immediately available.
