AMES, Iowa (KCRG) - Junior quarterback Rocco Becht has led game-winning drives before. It looked like he was about to add another.
But a fourth down pass from Becht to Chase Sowell was marked a yard short, giving Arizona State the ball back at their own 25-yard line, and giving ISU their fourth straight loss.
After a clunky start by both teams, the Sun Devils and Cyclones combined for 27 second quarter points. Arizona State led 17-16 at halftime.
Arizona State quarterback Jeff Sims ran for 228 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown run that extended ASU’s lead to 24-16.
Iowa State hit a field goal to make the score 24-19, but their next four drives yielded two punts, an interception and a turnover on downs.
Iowa State will hit the road to take on TCU next week.
