A Kansas National Guardsman has been charged with a federal crime after taking steps he thought would benefit the Russian government, prosecutors said.

Canyon Anthony Amarys, 28, of Alamogordo, New Mexico, was arrested Oct. 28 on an indictment charging him with attempting to violate the Export Control Reform Act, said a federal Justice Department news release put out last week.

Amarys made his initial court appearance Oct. 30.

Federal undercover agent took part in investigation

The indictment said Amarys met Feb. 27 with an undercover federal agent whom he thought was a Russian intelligence agent at an Overland Park motel, where he signed a one-page agreement to confirm their covert relationship.
