GRANVILLE, W.Va. (WBOY) — Amid the growing penny shortage in the U.S., more than 200 Giant Eagle locations, including ones in West Virginia, held a one-day event allowing customers to exchange spare pennies for gift cards worth twice the value of the coins.

Lines of customers were forming at the University Town Center's Giant Eagle location Saturday, where customers could bring in between 50 cents and up to $100 worth of pennies to receive a Giant Eagle gift card valued at double the amount exchanged. For example, exchanging $100 in pennies would result in a $200 gift card.

"I think it's great all around, you're getting double what they're worth, and you're getting some pennies back in circulation that are needed. So, seems like a win-win," Morgantown resident Stephanie Buzzo said.
