An Aboriginal-led domestic violence support service is demanding answers from the federal government and a powerful land council, over stalled progress in establishing a women's shelter in remote Northern Territory.
Since 2022, the Galiwin'ku Women's Space (GWS) has run a service in the nearby community of Gapuwiyak, and sought to re-purpose a vacant government office, addressed Lot 159, as crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence.
In emails sighted by the ABC, senior staff from the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) said in 2023 it was "working closely" with the Northern Land Council (NLC) and would "continue to do so, to progress a sub-lease agreement" for GWS to use Lot 159 as a shelter.
