Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has written to Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to break an impasse and allow Australia and the Pacific to host the COP31 in 2026.

As it stands, Australia and Turkey have been locked in an ongoing stand-off over who will host the climate summit.

The global event, known as the "31st Conference of the Parties" is set to draw more than 20,000 delegates.

It is to be hosted by a member of the UN regional group “Western Europe and Others States”, including Australia.

Of the 28 member countries, the Australian government has claimed it is backed by 23 countries to jointly host the summit alongside Pacific Island nations.

However, Turkey has refused to pull out.
