Aged Care Minister Sam Rae has signalled further reforms will be needed to meet the challenges of a rapidly ageing population, after the New Aged Care Act came into effect.

With Australia’s population ageing, the number of people over 85 has been forecast to almost double by 2042, increasing to more than 1 million people.

Mr Rae told Sky News Sunday Agenda the Albanese government's latest aged care legislation updates were not the end of the reform process.

“The New Act sets us up for the future. It sets us up for that ageing population and the challenges that those dynamics bring,” Mr Rae said.

“We of course need to see ongoing investment in the aged care sector from government and from the private sector as well.”
