ATLANTA — As local leaders in Atlanta and Fulton County have announced measures in the past two days to fill gaps for SNAP recipients who are set to soon see a lapse in their benefits with the government shutdown ongoing -- and as other, Republican-led states in the Southeast have announced measures to do the same -- Georgia as of Thursday afternoon is signaling no actions will be taken at the state level.

Calls are growing for the state to step in and provide direct assistance to families in need. According to the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute, around 1.4 million Georgians rely on SNAP benefits.
