NEW YORK (PIX11) – Former President Barack Obama called mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani to praise his campaign, The New York Times first reported Saturday evening.
According to The Times, the former president spoke with Mamdani on the phone for nearly half an hour.
Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and Assemblyman from Queens, is favored to be the next mayor of New York City according to recent polls. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa are also running for mayor.
The former president stated that Mamdani’s campaign has been "impressive" to watch and indicated he is invested in Mamdani’s success beyond the election.
PIX11 News contacted Mamdani’s campaign, and a spokesperson confirmed the reporting in The New York Times about the call.
