Melbourne Cup -winning jockey Robbie Dolan is wrestling with superstition as he plots another boilover in the race that stops a nation.
Twelve months on from his remarkable win aboard 80-1 shot Knight’s Choice, Dolan has reached deep into his kit bag for Tuesday’s return to Flemington.
The Queensland-based Irish expat will ride the Ciaron Maher-trained Royal Supremacy, seeking to become just the fourth jockey in the past century to win the Cup on different horses in successive years.
“You try to retrace your steps and get a little bit superstitious in a sense,” Dolan told AAP.
“I’ve brought the same whip. I haven’t used it since the race last year, so I might use it.”
But the 29-year-old — originally from County Kildare, west of Dublin — admits he’s in two minds.
