Michigan State fans were left wondering the same thing coach Jonathan Smith could be seen questioning a referee about in overtime of the Spartans’ loss to Minnesota on Saturday.
“How can that happen?”
After clawing back from 10-0 down on the road against the Golden Gophers and taking their first lead of the game in the final two minutes, the Spartans (3-6, 0-6 Big Ten) began overtime with possession.
On a critical third down quarterback Alessio Milivojevic took a shot to wide receiver Rodney Bullard Jr. in the end zone, with Minnesota’s Kerry Brown tugging at his jersey.
The ball landed just out of Bullard’s reach, but the penalty flag came out and pass interference was called to an impassioned response from Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck.
