A mass stabbing incident on a train in Cambridgeshire has left nine people with life-threatening injuries, prompting the arrest of two suspects. The attack occurred on Saturday evening as the train was traveling from Doncaster to London King's Cross. Police received reports of the stabbings around 7:39 PM, shortly after the train stopped at Huntingdon station.
Armed police quickly responded, boarding the train to apprehend the suspects. A total of ten individuals were taken to hospitals for treatment, with nine reported to be in critical condition. The British Transport Police confirmed that counter-terrorism units are assisting in the investigation, which has been declared a major incident.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes on the train, with one passenger recalling a man shouting, "They’ve got a knife, run," before collapsing. Another witness reported seeing a man with a large knife and noted that there was "blood everywhere" as people sought refuge in washrooms. Some passengers were reportedly trampled as they attempted to escape.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his concern over the incident, stating, "This is deeply concerning. My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response." He urged the public to heed police advice as investigations continue.
The train service has been disrupted, with railway lines closed while emergency services manage the situation. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police are conducting urgent inquiries to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Knife crime has been a growing issue in the UK, with recent statistics indicating a rise in such incidents since 2011. The government has been working to address this crisis, but the recent attack has raised further alarm among the public.
