ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) -Fire officials and Red Cross volunteers knocked on doors in south St. Louis neighborhoods Saturday, offering free smoke detector installations as part of a twice-yearly safety campaign tied to the daylight saving time change.
Mark Marbley wasn’t expecting visitors when he heard knocking at his door Saturday morning. When he learned the St. Louis Fire Department and American Red Cross were offering free smoke detectors, he welcomed the help.
“Yeah, I heard fire department and I was like ‘What?’” Marbley said. “Yeah, that’s a safety thing.”
The outreach program happens twice a year, reminding people to test their smoke alarms when clocks change and installing new devices with 10-year batteries when necessary.
