BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - First responders tended to the smoldering ashes Saturday afternoon left behind nearly two days after a devastating fire ripped through residential buildings in Birmingham’s Five Points South.
Nineteen people left without a home, many of them lost everything. Miraculously, no one was injured after a small vacant building on 20th Street South caught fire quickly spreading to the residential buildings next door.
“Historic. Been here forever. A little piece of Birmingham just gone,” a neighbor who lives across the street said.
Just before 5 a.m. Friday, Five Points South residents woke up to the smell of smoke and the sound of blaring sirens.
