The Boston Red Sox need to be prepared if they are unable to re-sign All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency this offseason.
After Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract last offseason with Boston, and the 31-year-old third baseman opted out of the final two years on his contract, electing to become a free agent. Bregman shone in his lone season with the Red Sox, being named an All-Star after slashing .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, despite only appearing in 114 games.
The Red Sox will have competition in the Bregman sweepstakes this winter, with Bregman's resume full of winning and success sure to draw suitors. MLB.com's Ian Browne believes that Boston already has its replacement for the three-time All-Star set in Marcelo Mayer.
