LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — As the federal government shutdown continues, local organizations across Arkansas are stepping up to help families struggling to make ends meet.

Volunteers with the Arkansas Foodbank spent Saturday loading cars with boxes of food — as part of an effort to support federal and state employees missing paychecks.

Kate Jenkins with the Arkansas Foodbank said the demand for help has grown since the shutdown began.

“We have seen already a 10- to 20% increase in visitors to some of our pantries. And there are a lot of first-time visitors that are coming out as well,” Jenkins said.

There is uncertainty surrounding the continuation of SNAP benefits, many Arkansans who rely on federal food assistance are now facing even more anxiety.
