Funding for SNAP has been ordered to continue as millions of Californians braced for a devastating impact come Nov. 1: A halt in issuing food assistance benefits amid the federal government shutdown.

But how soon the millions who rely on SNAP nationwide would get benefits issued wasn’t immediately clear on Friday, Oct. 31, when two federal judges, in separate cases, ruled that the Trump administration can’t stop funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and ordered the U.S. Department of Agriculture to use billions in contingency funds for the critical food assistance program, USA TODAY reported .
