Ongoing student loss and budget constraints are pushing Mesa Public Schools to assess its discretionary spending such as for block scheduling, student choice transportation and all-day kindergarten for fiscal year 2027-28 and beyond.

The district already has in place cost-cutting measures for 2026-27 that included an adjustment for fewer teachers – which the district hopes to achieve through attrition rather than layoffs - and a restructuring of the administrative staffing.

“When you grow as a school district, you can implement new programs and add new stuff,” Superintendent Dr. Matt Strom explained at the Oct. 23 Governing Board study session.
