WORCESTER — Saturday’s District 1-2A field hockey championship game was a nail-biter right down to the final whistle. Second-seeded Mount St. Joseph and No. 3 Kennett put on a defensive showcase as neither team was able to score deep into the final period of regulation.
It wasn’t until Margo Schwarz finally found the back of the cage with just over five minutes to play, and the Blue Demons held on for the 1-0 win.
The goal was historic for a program that was making its first final appearance in 40 years. It is the first district title for any of the school’s teams since baseball in 2002.
Up next for Kennett will be the opening round of the PIAA tournament on Tuesday. They will play host to a team from either District 3 or District 6 at 6:30 p.m.
