VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) - The Valdosta State Blazers took care of business in their Gulf South Conference opener on Saturday, downing West Alabama 45-35 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

VSU (4-4, 1-0 GSC) jumped to an early lead against the Tigers (5-3, 0-3 GSC), running out to a 24-7 halftime lead. UWA would chip away at the Blazer surplus in the fourth quarter, eventually whittling the lead down to three but the home team continued to match scores whenever it mattered most.

Jameson Holcomb had another strong showing for the Red and Black on Saturday, going 19-29 for 254 yards and three touchdowns through the air while the Blazers rushed for 141 yards.

Up next for VSU is another GSC showdown, hosting Delta State at Cleveland Field. Kickoff next Saturday is set for 4 PM.
