In January 1925, aspiring writer William Faulkner (1897-1962) arrived in the Crescent City en route to Europe. Plans changed and he stayed, renting an apartment in Pirate’s Alley, and writing his first novel, “Soldiers’ Pay.”
For years, The Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society, a nonprofit and educational organization, has paid tribute to him at a festival that aligns with his birthday. This year, the Society celebrated with its 35th annual meeting, a “black-tie” one, on a Sunday evening in the chapel and garden of the Old Ursuline Convent Museum. It was just blocks away from the above apartment.
