The number of people experiencing homelessness in Winnipeg has nearly doubled since 2022 — from 1,256 people to 2,469. As noted by End Homelessness Winnipeg, this is “the highest number in the 10-year history of the Winnipeg Street Census.” While some of the increase can be attributed to more accurate measurement, the visible rise in tent encampments across our city is a clear indication that more of our fellow Winnipeggers are struggling.
While governments are making sincere efforts to address the issue, the data indicate that there is still much work to be done. We are all diminished when our fellow Winnipeggers suffer, and helping to lift people out of homelessness will make Winnipeg a safer place — something that benefits us all.
